Measured Drawing of Screen Tower Showing Original Design
This cross section of the Screen Tower was included in the 1912 Annual Report. It gives the tower’s dimensions and shows the inner workings of the tower. Four rectangular screens are in position between the two influent pipes from the river and the four going to the pumps. To clean the screens, they were pulled up by a motor driven hoist to the cleaning floor and then lowered back into position. The thick, concrete walls were designed to withstand the impact of debris floating down the river. Note the vertical lines at the bottom of the illustration. These indicate the spacing of the wooden pilings that were driven into the muddy river bed to help anchor the tower in place.
